Karthik Calling Karthik

Karthik Calling Karthik, Farhan Akhtar's 3rd movie as an actor, is about a guy called Karthik who keeps getting calls from himself. The soundtrack is composed by Farhan Akhtar regulars, Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy, who've shrugged off a few average albums to come back strongly with MNIK.

Should you take this call?

1. Hey ya! : The first thing that struck me when I heard this song was its similarity to Endrendrum Punnagai and the fact that both songs have the same singer, the in-form Clinton Cerejo (who last sung Kya Karoon for Wake Up Sid), only makes the similarity more profound. Nevertheless, Hey Ya! is breezy, catchy and a great way to start the album.

2. Uff teri ada : The promo video of this club song is already generating a lot of curiosity for Deepika's new looks, but more importantly, with this song, Alyssa Mendonsa (I guess she's Loy's daughter) makes her singing debut and does a fairly good job of it. Not that this groovy song sounds bad, but it would've been a little better if somebody else had been the male singer, somebody more suited for these kind of songs; but unfortunately and obviously Shankar Mahadevan has the last say!

3. Jaane yeh kya hua : The man of all seasons, K.K, sings this beautiful ballad that will most likely and unfortunately be drubbed because of the "Uff teri ada" overdose. You'll take about 3 listens to get used to this song and once that's done, it has a greatly soothing effect whenever you listen to it.

4. Kaisi hai yeh udasi : Another very good song which might meet the same fate as song #3. Sung by Kailash Kher (whose Ya Rabba from Salaam-E-Ishq has a similar feel), it expresses the pangs of separation experienced by the protagonist beautifully. A really good sad song.

5. Karthik calling karthik : This one's a real stunner; one that is truly spooky and epitomizes the theme of the film brilliantly. Suraj Jaggan's hoarse voice is an added bonus to the spook factor. One of the best theme songs to have come out in a long time!

6. Karthik 2.0 : The starting here sounds shockingly similar to Nada nada(Avial) but slowly this instrumental theme establish an identity for itself, despite sounding a little like Don-The Theme in parts. Good enough to be played in the background as the movie progresses.

KCK is easily the best album to have come out this year till date and more importantly, SEL are back amongst the hits. Say "Hello" and embrace this album!
