My Name Is Khan

Coming soon!

Ishqiya

Vishal Bhardwaj's protégé Abhishek Chaubey makes his directorial debut with this village love story and gets his mentor to score the music, which is reason enough to review this album!

1. Dil to bachcha hai : Having an unmistakable Raj Kapoor feel to it, the song beautifully conveys Naseeruddin Shah's innocent, old fashioned view of love. Rahat Fateh Ali Khan takes a diversion from his usual melody-drenched offerings and gives us one of the best songs to have come out this year. Class act by the music director!

2. Ibn-E-Batuta : God knows what it means, but what we do know is that we have to give it to Vishal Bhardwaj for coming out with yet another imminent rural rollicking blockbuster that's going to send the masses into a frenzy like Beedi, Raat ke dhai baje etc did. And yeah, it's sung by Sukhwinder and Mika. Do I need to add anything more?

3. Ab mujhe koi : After two diverse tracks, here's a simple melody sung by the music director's wife Rekha Bharadwaj. Because it's way too simple for a Vishal Bhardwaj song, it doesn't make the kind of impact that the first 2 songs make, but it's not a bad song at all. It's just that it appears meek when compared to the previous songs.

4. Badi dheere jali : Rekha Bhardwaj couldn't get to sing Bhor bhaye(Delhi-6) as she had exhausted her quota with Aarti and Genda phool. Disappointed as she was, she asked her hubby to make up for it and he gave her this song! A super stunner in Subha Panthuvarali, Badi dheere is a gem of a song belonging to the endangered category of ragam based songs in commercial hindi cinema. Another class act!

Vishal Bhardwaj continues to surprise us with his sheer variety. As far as the quality and diversity of his work is concerned, I would say he is second only to A R Rahman. Three cheers to this largely unheralded hero!

2009 - Year End Analysis

The first half of 2009 was dull, except for a couple of albums. Things however changed with New York, and since then there were quite a few good albums lasting till the end of the year.

Pritam fared very well with 3 superhit albums in New York, Love Aaj Kal and Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani and a few other decent albums.

Salim-Sulaiman did very well with all 5 albums of theirs (8 x 10 Tasveer, Luck, Kurbaan, Rocket Singh and Pyaar Impossible) doing well.

Anu Malik made comeback of sorts with Kambakkht Ishq.

Vishal-Shekhar's only wish wasn't granted by Aladin's genie.

Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy mostly disappointed, right from the beginning of the year. They did Wake Up well with Sid, but then they made a nightmare of a certain London Dreams. Aasma from 13B was one good number they came up with this year.

A R Rahman had only 2 albums this year, but scored brilliantly in both.

Here I've listed my top 10 albums of the year along with the songs I've liked.

1. Kaminey : Everything. Extraordinary stuff from Vishal Bharadwaj.

2. Blue : Aaj dil gustakh hai, Fiqrana and Rehnuma.

3. Delhi 6 : Masakali, Genda Phool, Bhor Bhaye, Arziyan.

4. Love Aaj Kal : Aahun aahun, Dooriyan, Aaj din chadheya and Thoda thoda pyaar.

5. 3 Idiots : All songs. Shantanu Moitra shows his class.

6. New york : Hai junoon, Tune jo na kaha, Mere sang.

7. Kurbaan : Rasiya, Shukran Allah, Kurbaan hua

8. Dev D : For Amit Trivedi's sheer audacity to come up with 18 tracks and for Emotional attyachar( both versions).

9. Wake Up Sid : Kya Karoon, Wake up Sid, Iktara

10. Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani : Tu jaane na, Prem ki naiyya, Main tera dhadkan teri

THE song(s) of 2009 : Emotional attyachar, Aaj dil gustakh hai, Masakali, Dhan te nan.

Oh, and by the way, forget Tamil albums.

The more hindi albums I listen to , the more I decide to stop listening to tamil albums. How tragic most tamil songs sound when compared in quality to their hindi counterparts! I regret having reviewed Villu, Aegan and the kind.
